Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Here is a GREAT link with some affirmations for moms.

My current affirmation is…

“I am a fun and attentive mother and I find joy in my daily responsibilities.”

Here are some other suggested affirmations

I find joy in my children.

I am a fun mom.

I play with my children daily.

I choose to be happy.

There is happiness in my home.

Motherhood can be hard but I can do hard things.

Children find joy in my home.

Having happy children is more important to me than having a clean house.

I read to my children daily.

I cook healthy meals for my family and I LOVE IT!

The world is on my shoulders and I can handle it!

I love my children even when they are being difficult.

Books on Motherhood

Here is a list of books that I have found motivating.  Feel free to check them out at the library or purchase them.  I suggest owning them because they are books that I can just pull off the shelf when I need a little inspiration in the area of mothering.

Hugs for new moms by Stephanie Howard

My husband bought me this book when I was pregnant with Max (my first child) because I was having a hard day.  This book gives you stories and thoughts to help inspire you as a mother.

I am Mother by Jane Clayson Johnson

This book  was written by a woman who gave up her high profile career to become a mother.  She helps us take pride in saying, “I am Mother” rather than, “I’m JUST a stay at home mom.”  WE are important and this book helps us remember that.

A Mother’s Influence Raising Children to Change the World By. Margaret D. Nadauld

My sister-in-law gave me this book for my very first Mothers Day (wasn’t that thoughtful?).  It has helped me understand the importance of a good home for my children.  It is our job to help our children become what we want them to by.  It is a HARD job but who better then their mothers to do it?

Note: Do not get discouraged reading this book…let it motivate you and give you ideas to improve rather than making you see your mistakes.

A Mother’s Book of Secrets By Linda Eyre & Shawni Eyre Pothier

I bought this book because I wanted discount tickets to lagoon and I’ve really enjoyed reading it.  I actually haven’t finished it yet.  This book tells you the secrets that these two mothers have learned to help them raise their children without loosing their minds.  There are alot of GREAT ideas in this book.

Once again…don’t get discouraged reading this book.  I know that some women are too hard on themselves when the read books about improvement.  You do not have to improve everything at once.  After you read this book you will have more ideas floating around in your head and if you implement one of these secrets just one time it will benefit you and your children.

Stories

A story from Ancient Rome about the Gracchi (Gaius and Tiberious Gracchus)

From the Book Standing for Something by Gordon B. Hinkley

“The story is told that in ancient Rome a group of women were, with vanity, showing their jewels to one another.  Among them was Cornelia, the mother of two boys.  One of the women said to her, ‘And where are your jewels?’ Cornelia responded, pointing to her sons, ‘These are my jewels.’”

Thoughts

By Diane Loomans

“If I had my child to raise over all again,
I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I’d finger paint more and point the finger less.
I’d do less correcting and more connecting.
I’d take my eyes off my watch and watch with my eyes.
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.
I’d stop playing serious and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I’d do more hugging and less tugging”.

By David Bly

“Your children will become what you are; so be what you want them to be.”

By Abraham Lincoln

“No man is poor who has had a godly mother.”

By me (I think)

“Creating a memory is more important than creating perfection.”

By Meredith Gray, from The Beauty of Motherhood (quoted in the book, I am Mother)

I’d rather be a mother than anyone on earth
Bringing up a child or two of unpretentious birth…
I’d rather tuck a little child all safe and sound in bed
Than twine a chain of diamonds about my [carefree] head.
I’d rather wash a smudgy face with round, bright, baby eyes
Than paint the pageantry of fame or walk among the wise.

Videos

Thanks to our reader Michelle for passing along this video from Thomas S. Monson (Prophet of the LDS church).  It has a great message about priorities.
